Nail Tek 1, 2, 3 or 4: Which Strengthener for Which Nail Type?
By Edmond Lin, M1 Nail & Beauty Supply, Markham, Ontario. Last updated 11 October 2026. Product claims, directions and ingredients are Nail Tek's own published information.
The number on a Nail Tek strengthener is a nail type, not a strength level and not a step: 1 is for normal, healthy nails, 2 for soft, peeling nails, 3 for hard, brittle nails and 4 for weak, damaged nails. Nail Tek calls this Treat by Type. You pick the number that matches how your nails behave today, use it in a 7-day cycle, and move to another number when the nails change. All four air dry, need no lamp and are made for natural nails.
In this guide
The four Nail Tek numbers at a glance
| Number | Nail type | Strengthener | 3-step system | Pack colour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Normal, healthy | Maintenance Plus 1 | Nail Nutrition System | Green |
| 2 | Soft, peeling | Intensive Therapy 2 | Nail Recovery System | Orange |
| 3 | Hard, brittle | Protection Plus 3 | Nail Therapy System | Pink |
| 4 | Weak, damaged | Xtra 4 | Nail Rescue System | Purple |
How to tell which number you need
- Number 2, soft and peeling: the nail bends easily and the tip separates into thin layers. Nail Tek describes Intensive Therapy 2 as a protein formula that seals those layers together.
- Number 3, hard and brittle: the nail feels rigid and snaps or chips instead of bending. This type needs flexibility, which is why Nail Tek's matching Nail Therapy System is built around putting moisture back.
- Number 4, weak and damaged: the nail is thin, dull and will not grow, often after acrylic, gel or dip removal. Xtra 4 is the formula Nail Tek positions for severely weak nails.
- Number 1, normal and healthy: nothing is wrong and you want to keep it that way. Maintenance Plus 1 is the maintenance formula.
- Soft is not the same as weak. A soft nail (2) bends and peels. A hard nail (3) breaks cleanly. Picking 3 for a soft nail, or 2 for a hard one, treats the wrong problem.
- The number can change. The classic boxes say: "As nails improve, continue to the next appropriate formula."
How to use a Nail Tek strengthener: the 7-day cycle
- Start with clean, dry natural nails.
- For colour, apply a base coat and your nail polish first.
- Apply one layer of the strengthener as the top coat. Without colour, apply it straight onto the bare nail.
- Add one more layer every day for seven days.
- Remove everything with nail polish remover and start again.
The direction on Nail Tek's current packaging is short: apply one layer of Strengthen as your top coat and reapply over colour daily for 7 days. The layers build up over the week, which is why the routine ends with a full removal.
Single strengthener or 3-step system?
A system is the full routine for one nail type in one pack. Each bottle is 0.5 fl oz (15 ml).
| System | For | In the pack |
|---|---|---|
| Nail Nutrition System | Normal, healthy nails | Hydrate base coat, Strengthen top coat, mini crystal file with case |
| Nail Recovery System | Soft, peeling nails | Hydrate base coat, Strengthen top coat, Renew cuticle oil |
| Nail Therapy System | Hard, dry, brittle nails | Hydrate base coat, Strengthen top coat, Renew cuticle oil |
| Nail Rescue System | Weak, severely damaged nails | Hydrate base coat, Strengthen top coat, Renew cuticle oil |
- Hydrate goes on first as the base coat. Nail Tek lists Pentavitin, which it calls a "water magnet molecule" that prevents moisture loss, and calcium.
- Strengthen goes on last as the top coat and is reapplied daily. Nail Tek lists hydrolyzed wheat protein and vitamin B5.
- Renew is the cuticle oil, used every day.
- Choose the single bottle if you already have a base coat and a cuticle oil you like, or if you are stocking a salon table. Choose the system for a client who is starting from nothing and wants the whole routine in one purchase.
Old names and new names
Nail Tek has redesigned its packaging, and both versions are in circulation. The numbers and colours did not change.
- Intensive Therapy 2 is now labelled "Strengthen - Formula 2", with "for soft, peeling nails" on the bottle.
- Xtra 4 is now labelled "Strengthen - Formula 4", with "for weak, severely damaged nails" on the bottle. Nail Tek states it is formulated without toluene and DBP.
- The Nail Recovery Kit, the orange box, became the Nail Recovery System.
- Maintenance Plus 1 and Protection Plus 3 at M1 are in the classic white box with the number in a coloured square.
- The salon value packs of four bottles are also in the classic box: Intensive Therapy 2 value 4 pack, Protection Plus 3 value 4 pack and Xtra 4 value 4 pack.

Questions about Nail Tek
Is Nail Tek 4 stronger than Nail Tek 2?
They are for different nail types rather than different strengths. Formula 2 is for soft, peeling nails and Formula 4 is for weak, severely damaged nails. Use the number that matches the nail.
Do I use Nail Tek 1, 2, 3 and 4 in order?
No. The numbers are nail types, not steps. You use one number at a time and change only when the condition of the nails changes.
Does Nail Tek need a UV or LED lamp?
No. Nail Tek strengtheners, base coats and top coats air dry like regular nail polish and come off with ordinary nail polish remover.
Can I use Nail Tek over gel or acrylic nails?
The strengtheners are made for natural nails. They are often used after enhancements are removed, while the natural nail grows out.
Can I wear nail polish with Nail Tek?
Yes. Apply your base coat and colour, then use the strengthener as the top coat and add a layer each day for seven days.
Is Intensive Therapy 2 the same as Strengthen Formula 2?
It is the same number in the range in new packaging. The classic box reads "Intensive Therapy 2"; the new-look bottle reads "Strengthen" with "for soft, peeling nails".
What is the difference between the Nail Recovery System and the Nail Rescue System?
Recovery is the orange pack for soft, peeling nails (number 2). Rescue is the purple pack for weak, severely damaged nails (number 4). Both contain Hydrate, Strengthen and Renew.
