How to choose a builder gel
- Natural nail or length. A brush-on builder in a bottle is the quickest way to strengthen short natural nails; jar builders, hard gels and extension gels give more control when you sculpt length.
- Soak-off or file-off. Bottle builders such as IBD Building Gel soak off; hard gels are filed off, so plan the removal before you choose.
- Clear, pink or cover. Clear builders show the natural nail; pink and cover pink shades blur the nail bed for natural and French looks.
- Builder is not tip glue. To attach soft gel tips, use an adhesive gel made for tips, then add builder on top if the nail needs it.

Builder gel FAQ
What is the difference between builder gel and hard gel?
Most builder gels in a bottle are soak-off: they come off in acetone like gel polish. Hard gel is a denser, non-porous gel that does not soak off and is filed down at removal. Hard gel suits long sculpted sets; soak-off builder suits overlays on natural nails.
Can I use builder gel on natural nails without tips or forms?
Yes. That is a structured or builder gel manicure: after prep and base, float a bead of builder over the nail, let it level, shape the apex and cure. It adds strength to thin or bendy nails, and gel colour can go on top.
Why does builder gel feel hot under the lamp?
Gel gives off heat as it cures, and a thick layer of builder gives off more of it at once. Apply builder in thinner layers, or flash-cure for a few seconds and then finish the cure. Some products, such as Tango No-Heat Builder Gel, are sold as no-heat formulas.
