A gel base coat is the first gel layer on the prepped nail: it bonds to the nail plate so the gel colour on top does not lift. M1 Nail & Beauty Supply stocks regular, rubber and chrome base gels from DND, ONME, Cre8tion, CND, OPI, Kupa, Bio Seaweed, The GelBottle and Aprés, in 0.5 oz bottles and salon refills up to 16 oz.

How to choose a gel base coat

      • Thin, soft or bendy nails: a rubber or bolding base builds a little thickness and flex.
      • Strong natural nails and short sets: a regular base cures thinner and removes faster.
      • Stay in one system when a brand asks for it: CND Shellac, Aprés Gel-X and Gelish each specify their own base.
      • Prep first. Most lifting starts at the prep step; a dehydrator and an acid-free primer go on before the base.

      Gel base coat FAQ

What is the difference between a rubber base and a regular gel base?

A rubber base is thicker and more flexible. It self-levels over ridges and adds strength to thin nails, so it can replace a separate builder layer on short natural nails. A regular base cures as a thin layer and soaks off faster.

Can I use one brand of base coat with another brand of gel colour?

Many techs do, and most soak-off gels cure together without trouble. If a brand warranties its system or the colour lifts or peels in one piece, go back to that brand's own base and top coat.

Why does my gel lift at the cuticle?

Usually it is prep or product on the skin: oil left on the nail, base touching the cuticle, or a base layer that was too thick to cure fully. Dehydrate the nail, keep a gap at the cuticle and cure each coat for the full time.
