How to choose a nail buffer
- Read the grit. 80 to 120 grit buffers smooth enhancements and take the shine off before product; a 4-way or shine buffer finishes natural nails.
- Single, pack or case. Mini and slim buffers come by the case for salons that give every client a new one.
- Go lightly on natural nails. A buffer still removes nail; a few light strokes are enough before gel, and thin nails need even less.

Nail buffer FAQ
What is the difference between a 3-way and a 4-way buffer?
A 3-way buffer has coarse to medium grits for smoothing the surface and blending enhancements. A 4-way buffer runs from a smoothing side to a polishing side in four steps, for finishing natural nails to a shine without polish.
How do I buff natural nails to a shine?
Use the sides of a 4-way buffer in their numbered order, a few light strokes each, and finish on the shine side. Buff in one direction and stop if the nail feels warm. Do not shine-buff a nail that is getting gel or polish the same day: the base coat needs a matte surface.
Do I need to buff the nail before gel polish?
Most gel systems ask you to remove the shine so the base coat can grip. A few light strokes with a fine buffer are enough. Brush off the dust, then cleanse and dehydrate the nail before the base coat.
