Builder base gel is a thicker base gel that bonds to the natural nail and adds a thin layer of structure, so the base and some strength go on in one step. M1 Nail & Beauty Supply stocks builder bases in bottles and jars from ONME, JING, Bio Seaweed, Mr. Nail, Bio Natural and YHH.

How to choose a builder base gel

      • Bottle or jar. Bottles brush on like a thick base; jars such as JING JO01 and the Bio Seaweed bases are picked up with a gel brush and suit techs who sculpt.
      • Stay in one system. Bio Seaweed's Base Sculpting Gel is the first layer of its sculpting system; JING JO01 is the base of the JING jar line and JS02 does base, building and tip bonding from one bottle.
      • Clear or tinted. ONME Builder Base Gel comes in numbered shades and Bio Seaweed in Clear or Rose.

      Builder base gel FAQ

What is the difference between builder base gel and a regular gel base coat?

A regular gel base coat is thin and is there for adhesion. Builder base is thicker, so it bonds and adds a little structure in the same step, which helps short or bendy natural nails. It does not replace a full builder gel when you need length or a high apex.

Can I put gel colour straight over builder base?

Yes. Cure the builder base for the time on its label, then apply gel colour and top coat as usual; you do not need a second base coat unless the brand asks for one.

How thick should builder base be applied?

Work in thin to medium layers. Scrub a thin first coat into the nail and cure it, then float a second coat to even out the surface and cure again. One heavy coat can run into the side walls and cuticle and may not cure all the way through.
