ibd Hard Gel Guide: Builder Gel vs Clear Gel vs French Xtreme vs Building Gel
By Edmond Lin, M1 Nail & Beauty Supply, Markham, Ontario. Last updated 8 October 2026. Product details are taken from ibd's published product pages and from the labels on our stock.
ibd makes six builder-type gel lines. Four come in jars and are hard gels that are filed off: LED/UV Builder Gel, Clear Gel, French Xtreme and Xtreme Hard Gel. Two soak off: Building Gel, which comes in a bottle with a brush, and Dual Builder Gel, a soft gel for soft gel tips. The names overlap, and the jars share the same blue-and-orange label, so the wrong one is easy to order. This guide sets out what each line is for and what goes under and over it.

ibd Builder Gel Clear vs ibd Clear Gel
These two are the most often confused. ibd LED/UV Builder Gel Clear is the thicker gel that builds structure and length. ibd describes its builder gels as self-levelling, odour-free, with very little heat sensitivity, and as curing on demand, which gives extended working time.
ibd LED/UV Clear Gel is thinner. ibd describes it as a self-levelling gel that finishes with a permanent high shine, is chemical resistant and creates an impermeable surface that seals all types of artificial nails. Use it for thin overlays and as the finishing layer over gel, acrylic or wraps. It also comes in an LED/UV Clear Gel 8 oz for salons.
In short: Builder for structure, Clear Gel for overlay and seal. If the label says "Builder Gel - Clear" it is the builder; if it says "LED/UV Clear" or "Clear Gel" it is the thinner gel.
Which ibd pink: Pink, Pink II, Pink V, Natural II or Blush?
The LED/UV Builder Gel line has several pinks: Pink, Pink II, Pink V and the natural-toned Natural II, plus LED/UV Builder Gel Intense White for the free edge. ibd's product pages give the same description for every shade and do not say how the numbered pinks differ, so we do not rank them by tone here. The reliable method is to swatch them on a tip next to the client's nail bed.
What we can report is what salons buy. At M1, over the 12 months to October 2026, Pink outsold every other ibd product; Pink II and Pink V followed, with Natural II behind them. In the French Xtreme line, Blush outsold Pink and White by a wide margin.
French Xtreme and Xtreme Hard Gel
ibd describes French Xtreme as having all the features of its traditional gel with more vibrant colours, for sculpted nails, tip overlays, natural nail overlays and maintenance. Blush, Pink and White are the pink-and-white French shades. French Xtreme Clear is different: a thin-viscosity gel with UV inhibitors that prevent yellowing, which leaves a high-gloss finish without buffing.
Xtreme Hard Gel is the thicker line. ibd says it is self-levelling yet stays exactly where it is placed, which means less filing, and that its shades are fully saturated, so no gel colour is needed on top: apply, add top coat and cure. M1 stocks five shades: Milky White, Creamy Peony, Pink Glaze, Rose Luster, Champagne Sparkle.
LED/UV or UV only: how to tell
Most ibd gels sold today are labelled LED/UV and cure in either lamp. A few products come from the older UV line and their labels do not say LED. Check the label before you buy if your salon only has LED lamps.
| Product at M1 | What the label says | Lamp | LED/UV alternative |
|---|---|---|---|
| Builder Gel Ultra White 2 oz | Hard Gel, Builder Gel - Ultra White | UV | LED/UV Builder Gel Intense White |
| Hard Gel Clear Gel 8 oz | Hard Gel, Clear Gel | UV | LED/UV Clear Gel 8 oz |
| UV Bonder | UV Bonder; ibd gives 1 minute under a UV lamp | UV | ibd LED/UV Bonder |
What goes under and over ibd gel
| Step | Product | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dehydrate | Butyl acetate based dehydrator and pH balancer; removes oil from the nail plate before any system |
| 2 | LED/UV Bonder | Non-acid bonder matched to the LED/UV hard gels; cured in the lamp |
| 2 | UV Bonder | Non-acid primer for the UV gel line; cure 1 minute under a UV lamp |
| 2 | PowerBond | Acid-free bonder for gel, gel polish and acrylic; extra insurance under Just Gel Polish |
| 2 | Stick Primer | Primer for traditional hard gels and acrylics |
| 2 | Natural Nail Primer | Primer with a reduced percentage of acid, for clients sensitive to traditional primer |
| 3 | Intense Seal LED/UV | No-cleanse top coat applied last, over the filed enhancement |
Choose one product for step 2 according to the system you are using.
Hard gel or soak-off: which should a salon choose?
- Choose a jar hard gel for long sculpted extensions, for clients who are hard on their nails, and when the set will be filled rather than removed. Hard gel does not dissolve in acetone; it is filed down.
- Choose ibd Building Gel when clients want to soak off, or when you want builder results without a jar and a gel brush. ibd describes it as letting technicians of all skill levels sculpt and extend, with fast and easy fills. It comes in eight shades with its own Building Gel Top Coat.
- Choose ibd Dual Builder Gel for soft gel tips: ibd describes it as a soft gel that adheres the tips to the natural nail and soaks off, and it also works as an overlay.
How to apply an ibd hard gel
- Push back the cuticle, remove the shine from the nail plate with a 180-grit file and remove the dust.
- Apply ibd Dehydrate over the whole nail plate and let it evaporate.
- Apply a thin layer of ibd LED/UV Bonder to the natural nail, keeping it off the skin, and cure it.
- Fit a form or tip. Float the builder gel on in thin layers and let each one level before curing. Because the gel cures on demand, there is no rush before it goes under the lamp.
- Cure each layer for the time on the jar. The ibd directions previously shown on our listings give 3 minutes under a UV lamp; LED lamps are faster.
- Wipe the tacky layer, file to shape and remove the dust.
- Seal with ibd Intense Seal LED/UV, a no-cleanse top coat, and cure. Nothing needs wiping afterwards.
Cure times depend on the lamp and on how thick the layer is. White and opaque shades cure more slowly in thick layers, so apply them thinly.
ibd hard gel questions
Do ibd hard gels soak off?
No. The jar gels (LED/UV Builder Gel, Clear Gel, French Xtreme and Xtreme Hard Gel) are hard gels and are filed down. ibd labels Building Gel, Dual Builder Gel, Soft Gel Adhesive and Solid Gel as soak-off.
What is the difference between ibd Builder Gel and ibd Building Gel?
Builder Gel is a hard gel in a 2 oz jar, applied with a gel brush and filed off. Building Gel is a brush-on gel in a 0.5 oz bottle that soaks off. The names differ by three letters; the products differ in format and in removal.
Is ibd gel LED or UV?
Products labelled LED/UV cure in either lamp. Builder Gel Ultra White, the Hard Gel Clear Gel 8 oz and UV Bonder at M1 come from the UV line and should be cured in a UV lamp.
Which bonder goes with ibd hard gel?
ibd LED/UV Bonder is the non-acid bonder matched to the LED/UV gels. PowerBond is an acid-free bonder that ibd says can be used with any of its gel, gel polish and acrylic systems.

UV or LED/UV status follows the labels on our stock. ibd does not publish a statement that its jar hard gels cannot be soaked off; we describe them as file-off because they are labelled Hard Gel and only the other lines are labelled soak-off.
