Foil Transfer Gel: How to Use Nail Foil and Fix Patchy Transfers

By Edmond Lin, M1 Nail & Beauty Supply, Markham, Ontario. Last updated 4 November 2026. Product directions are the makers' own, read from their labels and product information; technique advice is general salon practice.

Foil transfer gel is a clear gel that stays tacky after curing, so nail foil pressed onto it leaves its pattern on the nail. Apply a thin coat over cured colour, cure it for the time on the label, press the foil on with the dull side down, peel the film off in one quick pull and seal. When foil comes off patchy, the cause is usually too much gel, an under-cured layer, or foil that was not pressed into every part of the nail.

Foil gel, foil stickers and chrome powder compared

Three products give a metallic or printed finish, and they are easy to mix up in the shop:

Transfer foil + foil gel Foil stickers Chrome powder
What it is A thin printed layer on a clear film. The print lifts off the film onto tacky foil gel. A self-adhesive decal you peel and place A fine powder rubbed over cured gel
Needs Foil transfer gel and a lamp Nothing but a top coat to seal A cured gel surface and a top coat
Best for Lace, marble, holographic and printed patterns with no visible edge Quick single designs and lines An even mirror or pearl finish over the whole nail

This guide is about the first kind: transfer foil with foil gel.

How to use foil transfer gel, step by step

  1. Finish the colour. Prep the nail and apply gel base and colour as usual, curing each layer.
  2. Wipe off the sticky layer. Clean the cured colour with cleanser on a lint-free wipe. Notpolish's foil gel directions include this step, and it leaves the foil gel an even surface to sit on.
  3. Apply a thin, even coat of foil transfer gel wherever you want foil. Keep it off the skin and do not pile it up at the free edge.
  4. Cure it. Follow the time on your bottle: ONME says 30-60 seconds for its Foil Transfer Gel, Cre8tion says 30 seconds for its Transfer Foil Gel, and Notpolish says 30 seconds under an LED lamp or 2 minutes under UV. The cured surface should feel sticky. If it feels slippery or wet, it needs more time.
  5. Lay the foil dull side down, with the shiny film facing you. Cut a piece a little larger than the nail, as Kaniu suggests for its lace rolls.
  6. Press and rub the whole nail. Use a fingertip or a silicone tool and work into the sidewalls and up to the cuticle line, because foil only transfers where it touched the gel.
  7. Peel the film off in one quick pull. If a spot is bare, press the same piece of foil onto it again before you move on.
  8. Seal it with gel top coat and cure (see how to seal foil below).

Partial foil, lace and crackle effects

  • Foil on part of the nail: foil sticks only where there is cured foil gel. Paint the gel with a liner or detail brush as a French tip, a stripe or a shape, cure it, then press the foil over the whole nail. The rest of the nail stays clean.
  • Lace: lace foil shows best over a sheer nude, a milky white or a solid black, according to Kaniu's directions for its lace rolls. White lace over nude gives a bridal look; black lace suits darker sets.
  • Crackle or broken-glass look: crumple the foil before you press it down, or cut it into small pieces and place them one by one. The more crumpled the foil, the more broken the pattern.
  • Layered foil: seal one foil under a thin, cured layer of top coat, wipe it if your top coat leaves a sticky layer, then add foil gel and a second foil on top.

How to seal foil without wrinkles

The printed layer is thin enough that a top coat brushed on hard can drag or wrinkle it. To avoid that:

  • Float the first coat of top coat over the foil with a loaded brush, without pressing the bristles into the nail. Cure, then apply a second coat normally.
  • Add a layer of gel base or hard gel over the foil before the top coat. Notpolish's directions say to seal with its base gel first, and a hard gel layer also helps stop foil chipping at the tip.
  • Cap the free edge with the top coat so the foil is closed in at the tip.

Why foil comes off patchy, and other problems

Problem Likely cause Fix
Nothing transfers Foil upside down, or foil gel not cured Turn the foil over (dull side down); cure the gel for the full time
Patchy transfer Too much foil gel, an under-cured layer, or foil not pressed into the edges Thin coat, full cure, rub every part of the nail; press the same foil onto bare spots again
Foil gel feels slippery after curing Under-cured, often because the nail sat outside the lamp's light Cure again with the hand flat and centred in the lamp
Foil wrinkles or smears under top coat Top coat brushed on with pressure Float a thin first coat, cure, then apply the second coat
Foil chips at the tip Excess foil gel at the free edge, or the edge not capped Keep foil gel thin at the tip; seal with base or hard gel, then cap the edge with top coat

If the gel in the bottle has thickened, check its directions: some brands suggest standing the closed bottle in hot water for a minute or two, then shaking it.

How to remove a foil set

The foil sits between layers of gel, so the set comes off the same way as the gel underneath. For soak-off gel, file through the top coat and foil, then soak off as usual. For hard gel or builder gel, file it down. The foil itself needs no special remover.

Frequently asked questions

Which foil transfer gel should I buy?

We stock four: ONME Foil Transfer Gel in a 15 ml (0.5 oz) bottle, Cre8tion Transfer Foil Gel in a 0.5 oz bottle, Notpolish Foil Transfer Gel in a 15 ml bottle, and Mr Nail D414 Transparent Transfer Gel in a 5 g bottle. The ONME label marks its gel HEMA and TPO free. Notpolish's directions add two tips: if small parts of the foil did not transfer, press the foil again, and seal with its base gel before the top coat. Mr Nail sells D414 in the same listing as its D412 and D413 stamping gels, which are for stamping plates, so choose D414 for foil. Mr Nail also says to keep the bottle out of the light and close it straight after use.

Which side of the foil goes on the nail?

The dull side goes down onto the foil gel, with the shiny clear film facing you. If nothing transfers, turn the foil over and try again.

Why won't my nail foil stick?

Check three things: the foil is dull side down, the foil gel was cured for the full time and feels sticky, and the coat of foil gel is thin. Then rub the foil firmly over the whole nail before you peel it.

How long do I cure foil transfer gel?

Use the time on your bottle. ONME says 30-60 seconds for its Foil Transfer Gel. Cre8tion Transfer Foil Gel says 30 seconds. Notpolish Foil Transfer Gel says 30 seconds under an LED lamp or 2 minutes under UV. The cured layer should feel sticky, not slippery.

Can I use gel base coat instead of foil gel?

Some foil directions allow it: the directions with our Marble Design Nail Foil Sticker say foil gel or base gel. A gel made for foil gives a more even tack, so it is the safer choice for lace and other fine prints.

Can I use transfer foil with regular nail polish?

Not with foil transfer gel, which has to be cured under a lamp over gel. For regular polish, you need an air-dry foil glue made for lacquer.

Do I wipe the foil gel after curing?

No. The sticky surface is what holds the foil. Only wipe the colour layer underneath, before the foil gel goes on.

Are foil remover wraps the same as nail foil?

No. Remover wraps such as CND Foil Remover Wraps are aluminium wraps with a cotton pad, used to soak off gel polish.
