Mr Nail W277 vs W278: Which Mr Nail Nail Drill Should You Buy?

By Edmond Lin, M1 Nail & Beauty Supply, Markham ON · Last updated: September 21, 2026

The Mr Nail W277 and W278 are both portable, rechargeable nail drills, and they are built for different jobs. The W277 has a 24V brushless motor rated up to 30,000 RPM and 520 g of torque, which suits full-time techs removing hard gel and acrylic. The W278 has a coreless motor rated up to 25,000 RPM and 300 g of torque. It costs about half as much and suits gel polish removal, prep and mobile work.

Mr Nail (MRNAIL, 美甲先生) is a nail brand founded in 2019 that sells gels, lamps, drills and tools. Its official store is mrnail.cn. M1 stocks both drills in Markham, Ontario. The specs below come from Mr Nail's own product pages (read September 2026) and from the product sheets that ship with our stock. Where the two sources disagree, we say so.

Which one should you buy?

Choose the W277

Buy the W277 if the drill is your main salon tool. It has about 1.7 times the torque of the W278 (520 g vs 300 g). Torque decides whether the bit keeps its speed when you press into hard gel, acrylic or a thick builder overlay. The auto start/stop and the built-in stand also save a few seconds on every pick-up, which adds up over a full book.

Choose the W278

Buy the W278 if you mainly remove gel polish, prep natural nails or work mobile. 25,000 RPM is enough for soak-off gel, cuticle work and refining. Its noise figure (47.4 dBA in normal use) is published, and forward/reverse makes it easier for left-handed techs. At $114.95 it is also the better first drill for a new tech or a home user.

If you are a full-time tech who already owns a corded salon drill, either one works as a second, portable machine. The W277 is closer to salon-drill performance. The W278 is lighter on the budget.

Brushless vs coreless: what is the difference?

A brushless motor has no carbon brushes rubbing inside it. It runs cooler, wears more slowly and holds speed under load, which is why the W277 is the stronger of the two. A coreless motor has a lightweight rotor with no iron core. It spins up quickly and runs smoothly and quietly, but it delivers less torque. That trade-off is why the W278 is lighter and cheaper but less suited to heavy acrylic removal.

What speed should I use?

Mr Nail's own guidance for the W278 is to use low speeds on natural nails and higher speeds for removing or sculpting gel polish, gel tips, hybrid gel and hard gel. That rule applies to both drills. Start low, let the bit do the work, and only raise the speed when you are cutting through product, never through the natural nail plate.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Mr Nail W277 good for acrylic?

Yes. The W277 is the Mr Nail drill we recommend for acrylic and hard gel. Its 24V brushless motor is rated up to 30,000 RPM and 520 g of torque, which holds speed better under pressure than the 300 g W278.

How long does the battery last?

Mr Nail rates the W277 at about 7 hours of continuous use after a 4-hour charge (3000mAh battery). Our product sheet rates the W278 at up to 20 hours, but Mr Nail's page describes that figure as standby time, so real working time will be shorter.

Do they come with drill bits?

The W277 comes with 3 bits and the W278 with 1 XF carbide bit. For more shapes and grits, see our carbide drill bits. Mr Nail doesn't publish the shank size, so bring a bit you already use to the store and we'll check the fit.

What is the warranty?

Both drills carry a 6-month warranty at M1. Keep your receipt and contact us at the Markham store if the drill develops a fault.

Where can I buy Mr Nail drills in Canada?

M1 Nail & Beauty Supply stocks both the W277 and the W278 at our Markham, Ontario store, with in-store pick-up (usually ready in 2 to 4 hours) and shipping across Canada. See every Mr Nail product we carry on the Mr Nail brand page.

Which Mr Nail lamp goes with these drills?

For a full cordless station, the W215 Pro Max lamp set runs about 3.5 hours on its 5000mAh battery and cures at 365, 395 and 660 nm. For flash-curing tips and sidewalls, the W173 flash-cure lamp strip uses a focused 395 nm LED with 15 s and 60 s timers.
