Seche Vite vs Seche Vive: Which Top Coat Should You Use?

By Edmond Lin, M1 Nail & Beauty Supply, Markham, Ontario. Last updated 11 October 2026. Product claims and ingredients are Seche's own published information.

Seche Vite is a quick-dry, high-gloss top coat for regular nail lacquer; Seche Vive is a fast-drying top coat that gives the same lacquer a plump, gel-like finish. Both dry in the air, neither needs a UV or LED lamp, and both come off with ordinary polish remover. Choose Vite for speed and a thin, glassy shine. Choose Vive when the client wants the thick, cushioned look of gel without a soak-off.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat for everyday lacquer manicures and pedicures where the client needs to leave soon. Seche recommends it for oily nails and nails that chip easily.
  • Choose Seche Vive Instant Gel Effect Top Coat when the client asks for a gel look but does not want lamp curing or a soak-off removal.
  • Keep both if you offer lacquer services at two price points: a standard polish finish and a gel-effect finish.
  • Neither is a gel. For a true soak-off gel manicure you need a gel base, gel colour and gel top coat cured under a lamp.

How to apply a Seche top coat

  1. Prep the nail: remove old polish, wash and dry the hands, push back the cuticles and wipe any oil off the nail plate.
  2. Apply one thin layer of base coat and let it dry for about a minute.
  3. Apply the colour in thin coats. Thick coats dry unevenly and chip sooner.
  4. For Seche Vite, let the last colour coat set for about one minute, then brush one coat over the whole nail and slightly over the tip. Apply Seche Vive the same way.
  5. Let the nails air dry. Reapply the top coat every few days to keep the shine and extend the wear.

Sealing the tip of the nail matters with every top coat: it is where chipping starts.

Why Seche Vite thickens, and what to do about it

Seche Vite thickens when solvent evaporates from an opened bottle. That is normal for a fast-drying formula, and it happens sooner if the bottle sits open during a service.

  • Close the cap tightly straight after each client.
  • Do not thin it with acetone or nail polish remover. Seche says to restore it only with its own thinner, Seche Restore, which replaces the solvents that have evaporated.
  • In a salon, work from a 0.5 oz bottle and top it up from a refill. The Seche Vite 4 oz Professional Kit holds a 118 ml refill and the Seche Vite 16 oz Salon Refill Kit a 480 ml refill with four 0.5 oz bottles.
  • Seche's ingredient list for Seche Vite includes toluene, so use it in a well-ventilated room.

Which base coat goes underneath?

Base coat What it does Use it when
Seche Clear Crystal Clear Base Coat Thin, crystal-clear film that helps lacquer grip The nail is smooth; natural nails, gels, wraps or acrylics
Seche Base Ridge Filling Base Coat Hides ridges and surface flaws; Seche calls it the ideal anchor for Seche Vite The nail is ridged or uneven

Finish the service with Seche Condition, a keratin cuticle oil, once the top coat is dry. Oil applied before polishing stops the lacquer from gripping.
