Aprés Gel-X Tips: Sizing, Shapes and How to Apply

Gel-X is a soft gel nail extension system from Aprés Nail. A pre-shaped soft gel tip covers the whole nail, is bonded with Extend Gel and cured under a UV/LED lamp. The tip is full-coverage, so there is no sculpting and almost no filing. Aprés calls it the original soft gel extension system; it is 100% soak-off and removes in acetone.

Natural vs Sculpted Gel-X tips: what is the difference?

Natural and Sculpted are the two Gel-X tip lines. They differ in the curve of the tip and the thickness of the free edge, not in the material. Aprés describes the difference on its own product pages:

If you are only going to stock one line, stock the one that matches your clients' nail beds, not the one that looks better on a swatch. A Sculpted tip on a flat nail bed leaves a gap under the apex that has to be filled with product; a Natural tip on a deeply curved bed will lift at the sidewalls.

How many tips are in a box, and what sizes?

According to Aprés, the current generation of Gel-X boxes carries 14 sizes, including the half sizes 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5. Sizes run from the widest (0) to the narrowest, and the half sizes sit where most techs used to have to file a size down. This is what the four formats look like at M1:

Refill bags are the part most salons under-use. A box gives you 20 tips of each of 14 sizes, but no salon uses 14 sizes evenly — sizes 4 to 7 empty first and sizes 0 and 9 sit in the box for a year. At $5.45 for 50 tips of a single size, a refill bag is the cheapest tip in the range per piece; buy boxes for the shape, then refills for the sizes you actually run through. Which Gel-X shapes and lengths can you get?

Aprés makes five shapes: Square, Round, Almond, Coffin and Stiletto. Length availability differs by line — Natural goes shorter, Sculpted goes longer. This is what M1 stocks as boxes:

Short and Medium cover most walk-in work. Extra Short in the Natural line is the one to keep for clients who work with their hands, and the Extra Long and Extra Extra Long Sculpted boxes are what you order for photo sets and events.

How do I size a Gel-X tip correctly?

Size by the width of the natural nail at its widest point, not by length. Hold the tip against the nail; the sidewalls of the tip should meet the sidewalls of the nail with no overhang on either side. If a nail falls between two sizes, take the smaller one and let the tip sit just inside the sidewalls — a tip that is too wide will lift within days.

• Use the half sizes. 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5 exist because most nails land between the whole sizes. Reaching for a half size instead of filing a whole size down saves the filing step that used to cost a minute per nail.
• Size every finger before you glue any of them. Lay the ten tips out on the tray in order. Sizing mid-application is where mismatched sets come from.
• Check the C-curve, not just the width. If the tip is the right width but rocks on the nail, you are on the wrong line — move between Natural and Sculpted.
• Keep a tip swatch at the desk. Clients pick a length off a swatch far faster than off a photo, and it prevents the "can you make them shorter" conversation after the tips are cured.

How to apply Gel-X tips, step by step

These are the products and the cure times Aprés publishes for its own system. Cure times below are the ones printed on Extend Gel Sensitive; follow the times on the bottle you are using.

1. Prep the natural nail. Push back and clean the cuticle, remove shine, dust off.
2. Dehydrate with pH Bonder. Aprés describes this as the first step of a Gel-X application: it removes oils and residue that stop the gel from bonding.
3. Prep the inside of the tip with Gel-X Prep. This chemically etches the tip so you do not have to file the inside. Aprés also uses it on the surface of the tip afterwards, to prep it for colour.
4. Apply Extend Gel to the nail bed and cure 30 seconds. A thin layer over the whole nail bed.
5. Apply Extend Gel to the underside of the tip, place the tip, flash cure 10 seconds. Hold the tip down while you flash cure with an Omni Light or equivalent.
6. Cure the full hand for 30 seconds in a LED lamp once all five fingers are done.
7. Shape, then colour. File the free edge, then apply Gel Couleur and a top gelcoat as normal.

Which Extend Gel should you buy?

Extend Gel is the adhesive the whole system runs on — Aprés calls it "the formula the Aprés family was built on". There are three versions at M1 and they are not interchangeable:

How long do Gel-X nails last, and how do you remove them?

Aprés states 4+ weeks with proper prep on its current tip boxes, and 3–4+ weeks on the extension kit. Wear time is set by prep more than by product: an oily nail bed that was not dehydrated, or a tip one size too wide, lifts long before the gel fails.

Removal is a soak-off. Gel-X tips are 100% soak-off and acetone-removable by design — file off the top layer, then wrap in acetone with remover foil wraps. Nothing has to be drilled off, which is the point of a soft gel system.

HEMA, TPO and TMPTA: what a Canadian salon needs to know

This is the ingredient question every nail tech is being asked in 2026, and the answer differs by country.

• In the EU, TPO has been prohibited in cosmetics since 1 September 2025, after the EU reclassified it as toxic for reproduction (Repr. 1B). TPO is a photoinitiator — the ingredient that makes a gel cure under UV/LED light. The EU ban applies in professional settings too, with no sell-through period (HPRA, 2025).
• In the EU, HEMA and Di-HEMA TMHDC have been restricted to professional use since September 2021 under Regulation (EU) 2020/1682, with mandatory "for professional use only" and allergy warnings.
• In Canada there is no TPO or HEMA ban. Cosmetics are regulated by Health Canada under the Food and Drugs Act and the Cosmetic Regulations, and gel products containing either ingredient remain legal to sell and use here.

What that means in practice: you are not required to switch, but the formulas are changing around you, because manufacturers would rather run one worldwide formula than two. Aprés now labels a large part of its range HEMA/TPO-free, and some of the newest Gel Couleur shades are labelled HEMA/TPO/TMPTA-free. At M1 the HEMA/TPO-free Aprés products sit in Aprés HEMA/TPO-Free Gel Colour and include Extend Gel Sensitive, Base Gelcoat X and the Non-Wipe Top Gelcoat X. Clients with a reaction history are the ones to move first.

Frequently asked questions

Is Gel-X the same as a press-on nail?

No. A press-on is adhered with glue or a sticky tab and is temporary. A Gel-X tip is a soft gel tip bonded with a curable gel (Extend Gel) under a UV/LED lamp, and it is worn as an extension for weeks, then soaked off in acetone rather than popped off.

Do I need Extend Gel, or can I use nail glue?

You need Extend Gel. The system relies on a soft gel adhesive that cures under the lamp and stays flexible; Aprés states the tips are designed to be used with Extend Gel. Nail glue is rigid, does not bond the full nail bed, and gives you lifting and cracks instead of a soak-off removal.

What size Gel-X tip should I use?

Match the width of the natural nail at its widest point. Current boxes carry 14 sizes including half sizes 4.5, 5.5 and 6.5. If a nail sits between two sizes, choose the smaller one: a tip narrower than the nail can be blended, while a tip wider than the nail lifts at the sidewalls.

Mini box, Pro box or refill bag?

A Mini box holds 280 tips and a Pro box 600, both with all 14 sizes; a refill bag holds 50 tips in one size. Buy a box to carry a new shape, then refill bags for the three or four sizes you actually run out of. That is how you avoid paying for sizes 0 and 9 twice.

How long does a Gel-X set last?

Aprés states 4+ weeks with proper prep. In practice the limit is prep and fit: dehydrate the nail with pH Bonder, etch the tip with Gel-X Prep, and never use a tip wider than the nail bed. A set that lifts in week one is almost always a prep or sizing problem.

Are Aprés products HEMA-free?

Part of the range is. Aprés labels many products HEMA/TPO-free, including Extend Gel Sensitive, Extend Gel Non-Wipe, Base Gelcoat X and a large part of Gel Couleur; the newest shades are labelled HEMA/TPO/TMPTA-free. The original Extend Gel and older shades are not. Check the individual product label.

Can I use Gel Couleur over Gel-X tips?

Yes — that is the intended pairing. Prep the cured tip surface with Gel-X Prep, then apply Gel Couleur in thin layers and cure each one, finishing with a top gelcoat. Aprés Gel Couleur is a soak-off gel polish, so the colour comes off in the same acetone soak as the tips.
