Triple Lanolin Aloe Vera vs Mango Vera: Scents, Sizes and How Far a Gallon Goes

Triple Lanolin Aloe Vera and Mango Vera are the same kind of lotion: light, non-greasy, built on lanolin and aloe vera. The difference is the scent and the colour. Aloe Vera has a mild fragrance and no added colour; Mango Vera has a mango scent and is tinted pale yellow. Both come from King Research, which says Triple Lanolin has been the moisturizer of salon professionals for more than 60 years. Pick by scent, then pick the size that matches how much lotion your salon goes through.

What is the same: the ingredient list

King Research publishes one base ingredient list for both lotions: Water, Mineral Oil, Aloe Vera, Glyceryl Stearate, Cetearyl Alcohol, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Glycerine, Dimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Lanolin, Imidazolidinyl Urea, Fragrance, Hydroxypropyl Guar.

Mango Vera adds two colour additives, FD&C Yellow #5 and D&C Red #33. Aloe vera is the third ingredient on the list and lanolin the tenth. Lanolin is a wax from sheep's wool, so neither lotion is vegan.

Which scent to choose

• Choose Aloe Vera when clients are sensitive to fragrance, when the lotion should not compete with a scented scrub or mask, or when you want to warm the lotion: it is the formula King Research says can be used in a warmer. King Research also notes that its mild fragrance makes it popular with both women and men.
• Choose Mango Vera when you want the massage step to smell like fruit. King Research describes its scent as tropical and invigorating.
• Stock both if you let clients choose: the two bottles are easy to tell apart, white and green for Aloe Vera, yellow for Mango Vera.

How far a gallon goes

One US gallon is 128 fl oz, so a gallon jug holds 6.4 times as much lotion as a 20 oz bottle. How many services that covers depends on how much lotion you use each time, so the table below does the division for three amounts. Pump a normal portion into a measuring spoon once (5 mL is one teaspoon) to see which column fits your salon.

These figures are arithmetic on the label volumes, not a manufacturer claim, and they ignore the little that stays in the container.

Refilling pump bottles from a gallon

1. Refill a pump bottle when it is empty rather than topping up a half-full one, so old and new lotion are not mixed.
2. Rinse the bottle and pump with warm water and let them dry completely before refilling.
3. Pour from the gallon jug through a funnel, or fit the jug with a gallon pump.
4. Refill each bottle with the scent printed on it, so the label and its ingredient list still match what is inside.
5. Close the jug tightly and store it away from heat and direct sunlight.

Using the lotion in a manicure or pedicure

1. Finish the scrub or mask step and dry the skin.
2. Dispense a small amount of lotion into your palm.
3. Massage the hands and forearms, or the feet and lower legs, until the lotion is absorbed.
4. Before polish or gel, wipe the nail plates clean so no lotion is left on the nails.
